Film and Theatre Club

Learning has undergone drastic changes over a period of time and more so in this globalized society where information is accessible over fingertips. Learning is no more about gathering information rather a medium expressing one’s abilities, knowledge and interest. Moreover, this medium is not limited anymore to the traditional textual reading but has taken giant leaps into various other forms like films, stage performance, visual arts and social interfaces. With this understanding, the Film and Theatre Club is established by the Dept. of Humanities, School of Liberal Studies, KIIT (Deemed to be University) Bhubaneswar, to screen films to enlighten the budding literati through interaction and discussion. The Club encourages students to develop their analytical expertise to understand films from different perspectives.

The activities related to film and theatre focuses on the skills pertaining to understanding literature, developing social dynamics, encouraging team spirit, inspiring gallantry, and infusing knowledge regarding various sociocultural movements and theories like Feminism, Dalit studies, Gender studies, Postcolonialism etc.

Theatre has been the foundation of drama ever since ancient times. Athens, which was a seat of culture, gave impetus to various theatrical performances which were modelled after Greek mythology. Similarly, over the many years, plays went through variations reflecting the many societal issues like poverty, feminism, class divide etc.

The relationship between Cinema and Theatre has been intertwined given that both the platforms serve as a mirror to society. Cinema plays a pivotal role in giving voice to the downtrodden, to the sidelined, to the ignored and to the marginalized.

Inception and Trajectory

The club establishment initiative was the first of its kind initiative in the school taken by Dr. Sahel Md Delabul Hossain in November 2020 with a handful of students of UG and PG degree programme. The club organized events like ________________. The establishment of the Film and Theatre club encouraged the school and further went on to establish Rhythm and Rhyme Club, Writers’ Club, German Club and Iraada in the subsequent years.

To screen films and documentaries of different genres providing insight to various issues and movements.
To encourage students to engage with films and plays on a deeper level by analyzing their themes, techniques, social impact etc.
To create a supportive environment where students can develop certain necessary skills like teamwork, leadership, creativity, motivation and learning.
To evolve the understanding of various literatures through their cinematic adaptations.
